This was not planned

Would you like a blind, geriatric chihuahua?  No?  Neither did anyone else.  Posted below is the picture the rescue put up 4 months ago of Shortcake, a very old (8-10 years) completely blind chihuahua.

I don't exactly know how it all happened, but last Saturday, before we knew it, the rescue volunteer outside of Petsmart had us taking this dog home.  I kept enough of my wits about me to make it clear that we would keep her for a week and see how she managed.  At the end of the week, we could bring her back if it wasn't working out.  We've had her for a week.  I went back to the rescue today to check in with them and found out that her foster parent has been in the hospital for the past 5 days.  So, I guess we have a dog.  Although calling her a dog is a bit of a stretch.  She's smaller than the cats and sleeps more than they do.

We haven't changed her name because Eyvind thinks it's the best name ever.

  2. I know. We're still in shock over how this happened. Clearly the rescue volunteers dabble in spells and black magic. How else can you explain me bringing home this animal - I don't even like chihuahuas! Luckily, she requires almost nothing of us because she's an old woman who only likes to sleep and have her belly rubbed once in a while. And she is perfectly house trained. I guess it could be worse?

  3. Yes...black magic indeed! How does a blind elderly Chihuahua get around? More black magic? :)

    1. She has already memorized the floor plan of the house, and somehow, she can get up and down stairs. I guess when you've been without sight as long as she has, you learn to manage.
