Family pet

We have a cat!  Her full name is Boudicca Jurassic Zane Human Sharpe.  Jesse and I agreed upon the first name, and the kids each got to pick a middle name.

I had seen 'Jessie' on the local shelter's website earlier this month, and as the month went on I watched her move to the top of the list.  The top of the list is not a good place to be.  Then one day she was gone; I assumed the worst.  Surprisingly, a few days later she was back on the list but lower down.  I again watched her creep toward the top of the list.  Yesterday morning she was at the very top of the list, and in the afternoon the shelter announced a discount on adoptions because they were at full capacity.  Still, Jesse and I weren't sure this was the time to get a cat.

It was actually her name that convinced us.  This afternoon I offhandedly asked Jesse and Dashiell what they would name a cat if we were to get one, and Jesse said, 'Boudicca'.  That was it.  Somehow, knowing what her name would be convinced us that we needed to at least look at 'Jessie'.  I called the shelter at 4 to see if she was still there; she was, and they closed adoption applications at 4:30.

When we arrived we were told that she might be shy, because another family had visited her and she kept close to the worker the entire time.  That did not turn out to be the case with us.  Almost immediately she came over and started rubbing against us.  And that was that.

It turned out that she had been adopted (which was why she was removed from their list for that short period of time), but the woman who got her hadn't put her in a room with a litter box and the cat went to the bathroom on the floor.  The stupid woman brought her back the next day.  I'm glad she did, because she doesn't deserve a cat.

Although Boudicca is very mellow and loves attention and sleeping in laps, she did not like the cardboard cat carrier.  By the time we arrived home, she had ripped huge holes all over it.  If it hadn't been for my coat held over the top, we would have had a loose cat in the car.  We will be investing in a proper cat carrier.
